Poverty & Education // Social Awareness Campaign

This social awareness campaign highlights the lack of primary education (1st grade through 5th grade in the U.S.) for impoverished children in Sri Lanka. The colour palette draws on the primary colours, which evokes a playful and childlike quality that is suggestive of the young children the campaign stands for. The intimate, large-scale photography is hard-hitting and shows the stark contrast between a life of poverty and a life of learning.

Process

The process for this campaign began with identifying and addressing a social issue that is close to my heart. Growing up as a first-generation American, I didn’t go through the same troubles many children in rural parts of Sri Lanka face, such as not having the basic right to an education. Reflecting on this sentiment, I conducted thorough research and found many statistics that highlighted the lack of primary education for particularly impoverished children in Sri Lanka.

Using my findings, I sketched out the foundations for the infographic. After initial sketches, I refined and reworked them in Illustrator in order to establish a concrete visual direction for the piece before working my way towards achieving the final product. This similar process of researching, sketching, and many iterations of designing digitally in Photoshop and InDesign was executed for the magazine ads, poster design, and mural design that rounded out this campaign.

Below are process shots showing the initial concepting of the infographic, magazine ads, poster, and mural.
